Public Education Specialist, Summer Camps

The Lawrence Elementary Camps team is seeking folks interested in spending the summer engaging kids in science and summer camp activities, mentoring interns who have been rigorously selected and trained, and building a community of adults with a passion for science education! Each team of two adult educators and two teen interns works together to prepare for and deliver 10 weeks of pre-developed curriculum in a series of 2-week sessions. Main responsibilities include facilitating camp programming in a fun, engaging, hands-on environment and managing the classroom (including interns) and materials in an age-appropriate manner.

Summer Camp Educators contribute to the mission of The Lawrence by facilitating STEM programs for elementary-aged kids entering grades 1-6. The incumbent will be trained to use LHS instructional methods to deliver exciting STEM educational programs to students of diverse backgrounds. They will be responsible for materials preparation and organization, delivery of programs, classroom management and conflict resolution, program set up and clean up, and communication with other staff, parents, and camp management as needed.

Job Duties and Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate camp programming in a fun, engaging, hands-on environment while supplying accurate scientific information to the best of your ability. This may involve further reading or research on a subject or topic. Its okay to not know the answer to every question!
  • Manage the classroom (including interns) in an age-appropriate manner, with safety and engagement as top priorities. Setting expectations clearly and effectively are critical for both participants and interns.
  • Manage material of individual camp sessions, including appropriate set-up, allocation, clean-up, and storage.
  • Serve as an enthusiastic role model and mentor for youth grades 1-6, as well as the teen interns supporting the group.
  • Thoroughly understand the building safety and help implement emergency procedures when deemed necessary.
  • Adhere to all of the policies and procedures of the Lawrence Hall of Science.

Scope Overview

The Summer Camp team consists of adult educators, teen interns, and camp management. The team works together to prepare for and deliver 10 weeks of pre-developed curriculum in a series of 2-week sessions. For each group of up to 22 kids, there will be two adult educators, and two to three teen interns. The camps take place at The Lawrence, and utilize the museum spaces and exhibits, while having a home base museum classroom. Camp themes range from astronomy to engineering to zoology, always being adjusted to be appropriate for the grade they are designed for.

Knowledge, Skills

  • Responsible, organized, and healthy work ethic.
  • Strong customer service and verbal communication skills.
  • Experienced and excited to share science experiences with youth grades 1-6.
  • Experience with creative teaching methods in informal and/or formal learning environments.
  • Pursuing or possession of a Bachelors Degree or a post-secondary education program in science, education, youth development, or related field.
  • Available to work May 19-August 15, 2025.
    • Please note: Priority selection will be offered to those committed to working the entire summer and partial summer schedules may be available.
  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to an assigned schedule up to full time, 40-hrs a week, Monday-Friday, 8:30AM-5PM, including one 45 minute lunch break and one 15 minute break.
  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively with an educational team.
  • A good sense of humor, flexibility, and ability to think quickly and adapt.
